The origins of Travel and Tourism as an industry dates back at least 2000 years. From the first humans who journeyed looking for shelter, food and water, humans have been travelling for exploring new lands, pilgrimages, wars & crusades, trade and over the last few centuries for education – ‘The Grand Tour’, leisure and tourism.
Today, Travel and Tourism is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economic sectors. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the sector contributed US$11.7 trillion to the global economy in 2025, accounting for approximately 10.3% of global GDP. It also supported 366 million jobs worldwide, representing 10.9% of total global employment, and generated one in every three new jobs created globally. As international travel continues to recover and expand, the industry remains a key driver of economic growth, foreign exchange earnings, employment generation, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange across the world.
